Polycystic ovary syndrome diagnosis: a permanent controversy

Abstract

The polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex disorder with etiology and pathogenesis not completely understood. Considering that multiple gene mutations may be related to the pathogenesis and that signs and symptoms are heterogeneous and vary over time, a precise definition of this syndrome, first described by Stein and Leventhal in 1935, has been lacking. In 1990 the National Institute of Health established diagnostic criteria for this disorder which were revised during a consensus conference held in Rotterdam in 2003. Despite this effort, the definition still appeared to be inaccurate and insufficient, so, the Androgen Excess and POCS Society suggested, in 2006, a new guideline for diagnosis and recognized that the definition of this syndrome must evolve over time to incorporate new research findings
