Abstract

The prevalence of urinary tract infection (UTI) is high among female adolescents. Identifying predisposing factors associated to UTI and encouraging preventive measures have great influence in the incidence and in the recurrence of the disease. UTI is frequently associated to sexual debut, therefore sexual history demands special attention. Lower urinary tract infectios are the most common in female teenagers. Dysuria, related to bladder infection, is the most frequent symptom at presentation. However, dysuria is also a symptom related to vaginitis so it requires careful history and physical exam to ensure a correct diagnosis. In male adolescents, the first episode of UTI requires special investigation with urinary tract imaging in order to search for structural abnormalities. Occasionally, UTI can be life-threatening, especially when associated with chronic diseases and pregnancy.
