Abstract

Objective: To determine the frequency of arterial blood pressure, lipid panel, and fasting glucose variations in overweight and obese
adolescent patients that attended the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease Prevention Adolescent Department of Pedro Ernesto
University Hospital between 2008 and 2009. Methods: We evaluated the correlation between biochemistry and anthropometric
variables and arterial blood pressure using the linear regression method. Results: The prevalence of obesity was higher in males
than being overweight. Males presented altered arterial blood pressure, Waist Circumference (WC), and a biochemistry blood
panel. These parameters were higher in obese patients than in overweight patients. The Body Mass Index (BMI) and the WC were
highly correlated within those patients. Furthermore, the BMI and WC had a signifi cant positive correlation with triglycerides, dias
tolic blood pressure, and systolic blood pressure. Conclusion: These fi ndings provide additional evidence and substantiate the need
to generate preventive programs that reduce the metabolic complications caused by obesity.
