Keywords:
Adolescents,, obesity, cardiovascular risk.Abstract
Objective: To identify the profi le of adolescents at cardiovascular and metabolic risk seen at a specialized clinic. Methods:
Retrospective analysis of 102 medical records of adolescents seen at the Adolescent Health and Study Center (NESA) at the
Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) between 2000 and 2008, evaluating characteristics related to: Body Mass Index (BMI),
lipid panel, glycemia and blood pressure. The possible associations among the categorical variables were observed through
the chi-square test, and the behavior of the continuous variables through the Student-t test. Results: Signifi cant associations
were noted between the BMI and age, lipid panel (high LDL and low HDL) and triglyceride levels of the adolescents studied.
Conclusion: Adolescents treated at healthcare facilities specializing in obesity usually present signifi cant co-morbidities
related to this condition, making prevention vital. Healthcare practitioners, teachers and family members must focus on
overweight as a matter of major concern.
