Abstract

Excessive weight gain during adolescence, particularly the accumulation of intra-abdominal fat, is linked to metabolic
syndrome (MS), a condition defi ned by assorted criteria that gathers together several alterations related to higher
cardiovascular risks. Traditionally, MS has been considered as a condition found in adults, although during the past
decade, reports of its appearance among adolescents have become more common, above all among obese teens,
regardless of the criteria or defi nitions used. Objective: To study metabolic syndrome during adolescence, together with its
physiopathology, highlighting specifi c diagnostic criteria for this age bracket. Data Source: Non-systematic review of the
literature. Conclusion: regardless of the criteria used, diagnoses of MS during adolescence disclose disturbing levels of this
disease, with ample potential for rapid progression and outcomes in just a few years, meaning that early detection of this
disease is becoming increasingly necessary in order to minimize its consequences and somber prognosis.
