Objective: To analyze associations between low weight of birth, age and other variables of adolescent mothers, according to data of liveborn infants National System (SINASC) of Feira de Santana, Bahia, in the period of 2000 to 2004. Method: Epidemiologic study of temporal character, carried through with data of SINASC. The data had been processed using unvaried and multivariate analyses to evaluate associations between mother’s variables and gestational results. The analysis of logistic regression was carried through to control factors of confusion (prenatal and gestational age) and to associate mother’s age and weight of birth. Results: The liveborn infants of adolescents totalized 9,963, 21% of newborns in the city, in this period; the premature and the low weight had been more frequent between those 10 to 16 years old and less than seven consultations of prenatal care; positive and statisticaly significant association was observed between low weight of newborn and mother’s age. In the analysis of logistic regression, to evaluate such association there was statisticals interaction of co-variable type of childbirth, while co-variables gestational age and prenatal number of consultations were the confouding factor. Conclusions: During the period of the study, maternity in adolescence was responsible for 21% of the liveborns of the city; the premature and low weight of birth were more frequent between mothers 10 to 16 years old compared with the ones 17 to 19 years, in the same conditions of life.
