Violence and abuse against children and adolescents, according the child protection service and Programa Sentinela of Feira de Santana (BA) and Centre Jeunesse de Montréal

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of violence against children and adolescents and the associations between variables, according to the child protection service and Programa Sentinela of Feira de Santana, as well as the sexual violence registered in Centre Jeunesse de Montréal – Institut Universitaire (CJM-IU), Montréal. Method: Epidemiologic transversal study with all the data of the child protection service (2003-2004) and the data on sexual violence of Programa Sentinela and CJM-IU (2003-2005). Data on violence, victims and aggressors were collected, as well as unvarie and bivaried associations were accomplished. Results: In Feira de Santana, the biggest ratios of victims were in the group aged 2 to 13 years in both sexes. Negligence (727) by omission of basic cares and abandonment was the most frequent type of violence; physical violence (455), by beating; psychological violence (374), by frightening. In Feira de Santana and Montréal, most sexual violence occurred at home and the aggressors were father, stepfather and other relatives. In Feira de Santana 72 occurrences of sexual exploration were registered. Conclusions: Violence occurred to all ages and both sexes, parents being the main aggressors; adolescent girls were victims of sexual violence by members of the family. It is necessary to spread information on Dial-Denounce number for increase of the records and encouragement of the protection systems.
