This study is part of a project that examines the living, health and work conditions of adolescents. Its goal is to describe the relationship between the occurrence of accidents at work during adolescence and the use of protective equipment. This is a quantitative study conducted with 312 adolescent workers enrolled in two state schools in Rio de Janeiro. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire and analyzed by the software Epi Info. Of the young people studied 70.5% reported contributing to family income, supporting the family or sustaining themselves, factor that often causes adolescents to enter the world of work. However, many of them do not make use of security equipment, with emphasis on gloves, hats and shoes. We found that 97.1% of adolescents who do not use helmets and 94.4% of those who do not use gloves have suffered accidents at work. Regarding the use of safety shoes, 96.9% of the young people who do not use them have already hurt themselves. It follows that there is a link between the occurrence of accidents at work and the non-use of protection equipment. This fact shows the unworthy working conditions of young workers.
