Background: Parents play an essential role in young children's physical and mental development, key functions of parental knowledge and caring practices. Low knowledge about nutrition, hygiene practices and preventive health practices may contribute to the risk of illness and stunted development in early childhood.
Objective: To examine the relationship between parental knowledge and practices, and physical and psychological health of 0-5 year old children.
Methodology: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was done to assess 250 parents whose children were under five years of age. Information was gathered about parental awareness, practices and child health indicators. Correlation and regression tests were conducted to assess relationships.
Findings: The research found 68% of parents had satisfactory knowledge about child health. Parents with higher knowledge scores had children with better health outcomes, with a 32% lower frequency of infections and healthy growth (mean BMI in normal range in 74%). Beneficial caregiving practices were significantly linked with improved emotional and behavioral outcomes (p < 0.01).
Conclusion: Caregiving knowledge and positive child care practices play an important role in childhood health. Enhancing parenting knowledge and awareness interventions can improve children's physical and psychological health.
