The Impact Of Screen Time On Cognitive And Behavioral Development In Pediatric Populations

Background: Increasing digital device use has raised concerns about the effects of screen time on pediatric cognitive and behavioral development. Objective: This study examines the relationship between screen exposure and developmental outcomes in children and adolescents. Methodology: A systematic review of recent empirical studies (2015–2024) was conducted, analyzing observational and experimental research on screen time duration, content type, and developmental indicators in pediatric populations aged 2–18 years. Findings: Higher screen time (>2–3 hours/day) was associated with reduced attention span, delayed language development, and poorer executive functioning. Behavioral outcomes included increased impulsivity, sleep disturbances, and elevated risk of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Educational content showed mild cognitive benefits when moderated and co-viewed. Excessive recreational screen use correlated with lower academic performance (effect size range: −0.20 to −0.35). Conclusion: Excessive screen exposure negatively impacts cognitive and behavioral development, while moderated, high-quality content may offer limited benefits. Parental guidance and evidence-based screen time guidelines are essential to mitigate risks.
