Background: Parenting strategies are important factors that determine the physical, cognitive and socio-emotional development of children. Different developmental outcomes have been associated with different parenting styles including authoritative, authoritarian and permissive parenting styles. Objective: The aim of the study is to determine the quantifiable changes of parenting styles in early and middle childhood with regard to child growth and development patterns. Methodology: A qualitative methodology (integration of quantitative data based on standardized developmental tests and qualitative parental questionnaires) was used, including 120 children aged between 5 and 12 years of age. Cognitive performance, emotional control and social adaptability were considered as growth indicators. Statistical tests: correlation models and regression models. Findings: The results revealed that there was a positive strong association (r = 0.68, p < 0.01) between authoritative parenting and cognitive and emotional development. Children, who have been exposed to authoritarian approaches, showed moderate levels in academic performance and low social adaptation. The scores of behavioral regulation (weakness) were related to permissive parenting (1.4). Conclusion: Authoritative parenting styles have the most well-balanced growth of children, although this does not mean that such strategies should be used universally. These results indicate that parental awareness campaigns should be initiated to encourage good parenting behaviors.
