Background: Asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis and food allergies are allergic disorders that have increased dramatically worldwide in recent decades. Environmental-related factors (air pollution, climate changes, urbanization, alterations to diets, microbial exposure, and allergens in the indoor environment) are of critical importance for modulating the mechanisms of sensitization and immune system development in early childhood. Understanding these relationships is important when creating effective prevention as well as intervention strategies. Objective: To review the association among environmental factors along with immune system sensitizing mechanisms involved in childhood allergic disorders as well as to evaluate possible intervention strategies to reduce the burden of allergic diseases. Methods: Review and evaluation of epidemiological, environmental and immunological data to assess the influence of environmental conditions on allergic sensitization. The main variables included levels of air pollutants, allergen exposure, microbial diversity, and diet and immune response markers. Results: The analysis found that long-term exposure to air pollutants and indoor allergens was correlated with a 28 per cent increase in the risk of allergic sensitization, while reduced microbial exposure was associated with a 24 per cent increase in atopic conditions. Early preventive interventions such as enhanced environmental management and allergen control showed a potential reduction of 30–35% in allergy-related symptoms and health care utilization. Conclusion: Environmental factors play an important role in the sensitization of the immune system and in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases in childhood. Incorporating prevention strategies targeting environmental control, early diagnosis and immune promotion can reduce the prevalence of allergic diseases and improve the long-term health outcomes for children.
