Abstract

Adolescent mental health is a global crisis and an increasing public health issue with anxiety and depression, stress and other behavioral problems on the rise during a critical time of transition. Educational stressors, peer factors, media influences, and parent factors play a role in these issues, and if not addressed early, can have a long-term impact. This research seeks to identify the key mental health issues among adolescents, and to assess the significance of early intervention and supportive action to support adolescent well-being. The multi-faceted methodology consisted of quantitative data obtained from surveys of the adolescents and qualitative data from the focus group sessions and interviews with adolescents and teachers. Emotional and behavioural disorders were assessed using psychometric assessments. The results indicate that the number of adolescents suffering from stress, anxiety and depression is high. Early intervention programs, especially those in schools, or counseling services were shown to have a significant positive effect on coping skills, emotional resilience and help-seeking behaviour. Early detection and support are crucial in tackling mental health needs of adolescents. Enhancement of the integrated support structures in schools and community in turn will make much lasting difference.
