Abstract

Background: Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most common birth defects and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide. Timely intervention and improved clinical outcomes depend on prompt and accurate diagnosis. Recent progress in imaging techniques in pediatric cardiology has enhanced the visualization of cardiac structures and functional abnormalities, thus enabling earlier detection of congenital defects.  Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of sophisticated pediatric cardiology imaging techniques in early detection and diagnosis of congenital heart defects. Methodology Detailed analysis was performed on pediatric cardiac imaging datasets and clinical reports. The imaging modalities assessed included echocardiography, fetal echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and artificial intelligence-assisted imaging systems. Diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, image quality and detection rates were used to evaluate clinical effectiveness.  Findings: Diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the advanced imaging approaches were 95.4%, 93.8% and 92.6%, respectively. AI-assisted imaging improved the rate of defect detection by 38%, and early screening reduced cases of delayed diagnosis by around 35% compared with conventional methods.  Conclusion: The advances in imaging in pediatric cardiology have greatly improved early detection of congenital heart disease. Therefore, the combination of high-resolution imaging and artificial intelligence can help in accurate diagnosis, timely clinical intervention, and improved patient outcome, and thus contribute to better pediatric cardiovascular healthcare.
