Abstract

Background: Pain management is an important aspect of pediatrics, especially for children who undergo medical procedures, surgery or treatment for chronic diseases. Conventional pharmacological therapies are effective but may be associated with adverse effects, dependence, and variable responses in children. Therefore, non-pharmacological therapeutic interventions are increasingly being considered as safe and complementary strategies for pain management in children. Objective: The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy of novel non-pharmacological treatment methods in decreasing pain intensity and enhancing overall well-being in children. Methodology: We carried out a prospective observational study of 250 pediatric patients, aged 3 to 16 years, with acute or chronic pain. In the course of the 12-month period, a number of interventions were used; these included virtual reality therapy, music therapy, cognitive-behavioral techniques, distraction techniques, relaxation training, and therapeutic play. Pain scores, anxiety scores, treatment compliance and patient satisfaction were assessed and analysed.  Findings: The results showed a decrease of 44.8% in pain intensity and 39.5% in anxiety levels. The rate of treatment adherence increased from 78.4% to 92.1% and satisfaction of patient was 94.3%. Additionally, procedural distress was reduced by 41.7% indicating the success of non-pharmacological interventions.  Conclusion: Novel non-pharmacological therapeutic interventions are effective in improving the outcome of pediatric pain management, by reducing pain and anxiety, and increasing patient comfort and compliance with treatment. Methods are a safe, patient-focused and effective adjunct to traditional pain management approaches.
